So, How Was Your Day?

Breakfast:
Raw oatmeal.
Lunch:
Salad as big as my head. Apple and almond butter.
Dinner:
Wheatberries, fresh peas, summer squash, white beans, and fresh herbs. Buttermilk-ginger vinaigrette.

Morning ➛
Aaron (my boyfriend) leaves early, which means ten extra minutes of cuddle time with my pup, Blue. Pop out of bed. Water flowers. Make coffee (La Colombe’s custom Dose Roast; it’s addictive). I’m trying to master listening to music and working simultaneously, so I turn on iTunes while scanning morning emails and Twitter for new stories. Look over my DailyCandy schedule for the week to make sure I’m on track. Make mental note to start taking real notes. Write a Dose blog post – the June market is approaching! Read NY Mag “Mad Men” recap. Email new favorite designer with a list of shops so she can sell in Chicago. Take break for a long-overdue chat with Daniel, my best friend who lives in Panama. Most everyone I know is too busy to talk on the phone these days, so my new mantra is to seize the moment, even if I’ve got a lot going on.
Noon ➛
Head to lunch with one of my favorite people, Tim from Lottie + Doof. Back home to write a story about Camp Wandawega’s new online shop. Get distracted by Lonny’s newest issue. Hate when that happens. Wait. Love when that happens. Feel myself getting droopy-eyed, so I pop in my Tracy Anderson DVD. She kicks my ass. Edit a story, shower, then thumb through Ancient Grains for Modern Meals, one of my favorite new cookbooks, for dinner inspiration.
Night ➛
Cook a spring meal courtesy of Green City Market. Cooking dinner is always the best part of my day; I’m never happier than when I’m in my kitchen. Afterwards, I meet a friend to see The Intouchables. It’s incredible – I highly recommend it. At home, Aar shows me a few projects he’s been working on. Crawl into bed. Read The New Yorker and fall asleep thinking about Iranian elections. (I don’t recommend it.)

Three Last Things…
1. What is up with those pillows? Are you a Run DMC fan?
These pillows get a lot of attention. They were a gift from a friend who was either trying to make me look cool, or slyly referencing the fact that Aaron is into hip hop. And yes, I’m a fan. They’re monumental (the group, not the pillows).
2. You put us to shame with the dinner you made. Where do you find the inspiration/motivation to cook after your busy days?
Cooking makes me so happy that it doesn’t require motivation. I find a ton of inspiration at Green City Market — I let the seasons be my guide when I cook. Having a fully stocked pantry with lots of grains and spices helps me throw together basically anything when I have the right produce on hand. I love Plenty, by Yotam Ottolenghi. Whenever I have a mental block, I make a beeline for that book. On the magazine front, Saveur is my one love.
3. We hear Dose Market is celebrating its first birthday this weekend. We also hear you love the NBA. Choose your starting five Dream Team vendors.
*Yotam Ottolenghi serving a spread of Mediterranean mezze. *New York’s The Juice Press serving cold-pressed juice and chia seed pudding. *Nikki Garcia from First Rite selling menswear-inspired womenswear. *My grandma, Elaine, selling all of the furniture, clothing, and jewelry she has collected over the years (she’s been around the world multiple times). *Michael Jordan selling Hanes. A true classic.

Emily lives in Chicago with her equally ambitious beau Aaron (of Becker Design). She is the editor of DailyCandy Chicago and a founder of Dose Market. dosemarket.com
